On 31st May2025, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, paid a working visit to Golden Star Resources (GSR) Wassa Mine in the Western Region of Ghana. The visit reflected growing diplomatic and investor confidence in GSR’s operations under the ownership of Chifeng Gold.

The Ambassador was warmly received by Mr. Kevin Chen, Chairman of GSR Wassa, and Mr. Shaddrack Adjetey Sowah, Managing Director, along with other members of the leadership team.

In a pre-tour briefing, the team shared GSR Wassa’s operational priorities, with emphasis on safety, employee well-being, and long-term stakeholder value. The Ambassador was then taken on a guided tour of key facilities, including the Processing Plant, Tailings Storage Facilities, and host communities.

The Ambassador also experienced the GSR’s award-winning alternative livelihood programme, the Golden Star Oil Palm Plantation (GSOPP), as well as major community development projects delivered through the Golden Star Development Foundation. These included a furnished model school, community centres, as well as multiple teacher accommodation facilities aimed at enhancing education and quality of life in GSR’s host communities.

Ambassador Defa expressed admiration for the company’s community investments, remarking, “GSR Wassa is not just mining, it is an integral part of the community.” He praised the company’s approach to shared prosperity, calling it a practical reflection of the Ghana–China partnership in action, as China remains one of Ghana’s largest and longest trading partners.

Mr. Chen emphasized that GSR’s commitment to community development reflects the core value of Chifeng Gold its parents company “to benefit others with the development of Chifeng Gold.” He added that in just four years since Chifeng Gold’s acquisition of GSR Wassa, the company has not only gained the trust of the Ghanaian government but has also earned the attention and respect of the Chinese government, as demonstrated by the Ambassador’s visit.

He also noted that Chifeng Gold’s successful listing on both the Hong Kong and Shanghai Stock Exchanges is a demonstration to the group’s global credibility, strategic leadership, and commitment to responsible mining.

The visit reinforced GSR Wassa’s status as a responsible international mining company and a trusted development partner in Ghana’s mining sector.
