Golden Star Wassa Limited (GSWL) on Friday, 4th April 2025, commenced its Regional Stakeholder engagement in the Western Region of Ghana, where its mining operations is located.
The engagements began with courtesy calls on key regional authorities. Representatives of GSWL paid visits to the newly appointed Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson and the Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Osei Akoto Arthur. These introductory meetings offered the company an opportunity to engage directly with the region's leadership, exchange ideas, and reaffirm its commitment to fostering peace, security, and socio-economic development in the region.
Following the courtesy visits, GSWL hosted a well-attended Stakeholders’ Forum which brought together representatives from several key institutions, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Minerals Commission, Ghana Immigration Service, Police Regional Command, Water Resources Commission, Forestry Commission, the Western Regional Coordinating Council, and the media.
During the forum, the Golden Star team shared significant company updates. These included the recent listing of its parent company on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the anticipated benefits this development would bring to its subsidiaries, including Golden Star Wassa. A notable operational update was the announcement of a $30 million investment in drilling programmes and the resumption of mining operations at the company’s Benso site.
In his remarks, the Western Regional Minister commended GSWL for its proactive stakeholder engagement efforts. He encouraged the company to consider routing some of its imports through the Takoradi Port as a means to boost local economic activity and create employment for residents in the region.
The forum also served as a platform for open dialogue. Stakeholders lauded GSWL for initiating the engagement and creating space to deliberate on issues of mutual concern. Participants emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration between mining companies and regulatory bodies to ensure responsible mining and sustainable development.
Mr. Gerard Osei Boakye, Corporate Affairs Manager of GSWL, expressed gratitude for the longstanding support the company continues to receive from stakeholders in the region. He underscored the company's commitment to deepening engagements through similar forums across its catchment areas. Upcoming engagements will include meetings with Traditional Rulers, community leaders, and youth groups to ensure inclusive development and shared prosperity.
Also present at the programme were Mr. James German, Manager for Safety, Health and Environment, and Mrs. Boatemaa Hammond, Corporate Affairs Superintendent.
